At WEFTEC 2018 New Orleans, stand 2357, HRS Heat Exchangers will demonstrate the trial version of its unique effluent Concentration System for the first time ever in the US. The trial system enables plant operators to measure how much their effluent waste volumes can be reduced before committing to a full-sized system.

With the trial-size unit, HRS Heat Exchangers allows plant operators to see for themselves not only how the system operates, how it will fit into their existing set-up and by how much the volume of effluent or digestate will be reduced – but also how it stacks up as a financial business case.

For example, a typical 1.5 MW anaerobic digestion (AD) plant produces 44,100 tons of liquid effluent/digestate each year, causing storage and transport headaches for plant operators. By using evaporation to increase the dry matter content of digestate typically from 2% to 10%, the HRS Digestate Concentration System (designed for the AD industry) reduces the volume of liquid digestate by around 80% – at the same time as increasing the nutrient content. This means up to 80% less digestate storage capacity and fewer lorry loads are required, helping to curb a plant’s operational costs and carbon footprint, while creating a richer biofertiliser. Furthermore, the water removed by the process is recovered and mixed with the plant’s feedstock, increasing the efficiency of the digester and reducing the amount of energy and water used by the AD plant. The system can also be used to concentrate other industrial effluent waste streams such as leachate.

With the trial-size unit, HRS Heat Exchangers allows plant operators to see for themselves not only how the system operates, how it will fit into their existing set-up and by how much the volume of effluent or digestate will be reduced – but also how it stacks up as a financial business case.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the process of setting up a trial but it’s an ideal way to ensure that a potential system is right for your operation before making an investment decision,” says Matt Hale, HRS International Sales & Marketing Director. “On average a two day trial is sufficient to show clients the benefits of our concentration technology and I look forward to showing visitors to our stand how our Concentration System can improve their process.”
